The Immortal City

In just 24 hours, Pompeii and neighboring Herculaneum were buried by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The site was lost for centuries and remained almost entirely untouched until 1748. Today, the most advanced scientific research brings to light the extraordinary achievements of Pompeii and the Roman world. Through artworks, interactive mechanical devices and multimedia experiences, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through time and space into the daily life of a first-century Roman town. It puts visitors at the center of events as they hear and feel the roar of the volcano erupting before their eyes. They will discover how the excavation of Pompeii in the 18th century influenced the development of archaeology as a scientific study. In the final section of the exhibition, visitors have the opportunity to play the role of archaeologist through the use of multiple digital interactives and replicas of artifacts from Pompeii.
