THE EYE OF NAPOLÉON

In addition to his political and military callings, Napoléon I had an appetite for beautiful things. He showered gifts on his wives, lovers and members of his family, often commissioned from the grand luxury manufactories of France, which he also employed to furnish his many royal palaces.

The reign of Napoléon was an exceptionally fertile period for the creative arts.  The Emperor himself declared it his heartfelt wish to see French artists surpass the glory and reputation of the classical civilizations of Athens and Rome.  The Eye of Napoléon ties us to the times, tastes and visual interests of Napoléon through a presentation of more than 200 works of art and craftsmanship.  Providing insight into Napoléon’s aesthetic interests are objects owned and used by the Emperor, as well as many gifts he lavished on those around him.  Some of these gifts were created of porcelain from Sévres, silk from Lyon and woven fabrics from Aubusson.

Among the many masterpieces in the exhibition are paintings and drawings by the great artists of the day, including Gérard, Prud’hon, Gros, David and Percier et Fontaine, and wonderfully life-like creations by the period’s most renowned sculptors– Houdon, Canova and Chaudet.  Exceptional jewels from the imperial family and fine pieces of furniture owned by Napoléon, Murat, Queen Hortense and several generals of the imperial army will also be displayed.  In addition, the exhibition features elegantly bound books with distinguished coats-of-arms, documents and clothing from the period, including a very rare hat that belonged to Napoléon.

Discover a completely new view of the greatest masterpieces the First Empire created in a style that is known today as the Empire Style.  You will be overwhelmed by the splendor and fine craftsmanship of these objects, which, although of the highest museum quality, in fact come from one of the world’s most stunning and complete private collections.
