ANGELS GLORIOUS, SAINTS VICTORIOUS
Sacred Art in Viceregal Peru
We can thank Catholic religious rivalry for the delightful development of colonial painting in Viceregal Peru. In the 16th century, many Catholic orders arrived in Peru, each wanting to convert the highest number of native Americans. Using images of angels, saints and Bible stories, the artists of the newly-formed Lima and Cuzco schools of painting produced dramatic, sumptuous and emotional pieces of spiritual art to spread the teachings of the Catholic Church to Peruvians who did not speak Spanish. This exhibition presents 50-60 of these spectacular religious works from the finest private collections in Peru.
